L&T Partners with McPhy to Produce Green Hydrogen Electrolyzers in India

L&T, which is short for Larsen & Toubro, has recently entered into a binding agreement with McPhy Energy, a company that specializes in the production of electrolyzer technology in France. The agreement is intended to establish a long-term partnership between the two companies, with a focus on identifying opportunities in the emerging green hydrogen market. Through this partnership, McPhy will grant L&T an exclusive license to utilize its pressurized alkaline electrolyzer technology for manufacturing electrolyzers, along with any upcoming product upgrades.

L&T Plan to Set Up a Large Scale Manufacturing Facility in India

In line with its strategic objective of establishing a presence across the green energy value chain, L&T plans to set up a large-scale manufacturing facility for electrolyzers in India. This facility will be based on McPhy’s technology and will have a capacity of one gigawatt to meet the growing demand in the domestic market and selected regions. L&T has stated that this proposed agreement is aligned with its strategic objectives, while also supporting McPhy’s aim to expand its operations beyond the European market.

Setup to Produce 45 kg of Green Hydrogen Every Day

In the previous year, L&T made an announcement regarding the commissioning of a green hydrogen facility at its AM Naik Heavy Engineering Complex in Hazira, Gujarat. The facility was set up to produce 45 kg of green hydrogen every day for captive consumption at L&T’s Hazira manufacturing complex. In light of the increasing importance of green hydrogen as a key fuel in the future energy mix, L&T is pleased to have entered into an agreement with McPhy. The partnership is expected to be mutually beneficial, as L&T has a strong presence across the entire energy value chain in terms of manufacturing, EPC, and services, while McPhy is a leader in technology and research in this sector. Subramanian Sarma, who is the Whole Time Director (Energy) at L&T, expressed his satisfaction with the new partnership.

McPhy Wants To Be A Global Leader In The Manufacture Of Electrolyzers

According to Jean-Baptiste, the CEO of McPhy, partnering with a significant company like Larsen & Toubro is an excellent opportunity for McPhy to become a global leader in electrolyzer manufacturing. The fact that the two companies have formed a partnership proves the strong appeal of McPhy’s technology and its potential to expand into new markets.

Earlier this year, L&T signed a memorandum of understanding with H2Carrier, a Norway-based company, to collaborate on industrial-scale floating green ammonia projects.

India has ambitious plans to become a leading global hub for green hydrogen and aims to use it across various sectors. The Union Cabinet has approved the National Green Hydrogen Mission to support this goal. The National Green Hydrogen Mission allocated an initial outlay of ₹197.44 billion (~$2.3 billion), which will play a key role in stimulating the demand, production, utilization, and export of green hydrogen.
